What an insightful and inspiring Expert Witness Seminar! The energy in the room was key in achieving powerful engagement and discussion.
The seminar opened with a keynote address from Dr John Sorabji of UCL, who explored the nature of expert witness duties and what can go wrong when there is non-compliance, highlighting why the need for education is key to avoiding such mishaps. Drawing on his work with the Civil Justice Council, Dr Sorabji discussed emerging issues affecting the profession, including the growing influence of artificial intelligence and the importance of maintaining high professional standards through education and training.
A panel discussion chaired by Gerard McDermott followed, featuring Peter Walmsley – HF, Chris Smith – Stewarts, Tom Wethers – Accommodation Expert and Catherine Johnson – Care Expert. The session considered a range of contemporary medico-legal issues and provided valuable perspectives from both legal and expert witnesses. Discussions focused on current challenges, evolving expectations and practical considerations for those working within the medico-legal sector.
Next Michelle Hornsby, FCILEx provided a valuable reminder of the importance of ensuring that Part 35 requirements are fully reflected in the content of expert reports; a crucial foundation for producing evidence that is robust and court compliant.
We were also delighted to hear from David Withers, whose engaging and informative session on Artificial Intelligence explored both the opportunities and challenges AI presents for experts and the wider legal community.
Attendees also received a case law update from Elinor Watts, who reviewed recent judicial criticisms of expert evidence and outlined the lessons that can be drawn to support good practice.
A cross-examination simulation brought the realities of courtroom scrutiny to life and offered attendees an invaluable opportunity to observe an advocate’s approach to expert evidence in action.
