Dr John Sorabji, UCL gave the keynote speech at our second Enhancing Expertise medico-legal training seminar in which he examined the approach to maximising the prospect that experts act in the interests of justice – the ‘3 Is’ – “Independence, Impartiality and Integrity”. He highlighted the importance of education to avoid unintentional non-compliance with expert duties and ensure that experts are equipped to meet the standards expected of them. Looking to the future, Dr Sorabji examined the emerging challenges posed by artificial intelligence to the three “I”s and he also raised the prospect of an Expert Witness Council. We can all play a part in establishing a body that could set consistent standards, promote effective training and accreditation and, most importantly, build a single, professional community. It was an insightful and thought provoking session and we are delighted to share the content with you.
